Many journeys use southern South American gateways and involve a significant sea crossing. Long itineraries may combine Antarctica with other regions. Check the number of days actually spent in polar waters and the arrangements before and after the voyage.
Weather and ice control access, so routes, landings and wildlife encounters cannot be guaranteed. Ask about mobility requirements, small-boat transfers, expedition clothing and medical facilities. Choose the journey for its overall experience rather than a promised sighting.
Travel normally takes place during the austral summer. Specialist insurance, evacuation cover and appropriate medical preparation are important. Follow operator biosecurity guidance and review the FCDO’s British Antarctic Territory advice alongside advice for every transit country.
